Jharkhand High Court Seeks SIT Progress Report in Anushka Chakraborty Death Case

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has stepped up its scrutiny of the investigation into the suspicious death of Hazaribagh-based advocate Anushka Chakraborty, directing the state government to submit a detailed status report on the progress of the probe. The development comes after the government informed the court that an eight-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted and the deceased's husband has been arrested.

During the hearing before Justice Rangan Mukhopadhyay, the state government informed the court that the SIT is being headed by the Hazaribagh Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO). It also confirmed that Anushka's husband had been taken into custody and questioned as part of the investigation.

After considering the government's submissions, the High Court directed it to file a status report detailing the progress of the investigation before the next hearing. The matter has been listed for further hearing on November 19.

The petition was filed by the deceased's brother, Debajit Chakraborty, who approached the High Court through a criminal writ petition seeking a fair and impartial investigation into his sister's death.

During an earlier hearing, the court had directed the state government to entrust the investigation to an officer of DSP rank and ensure that the probe was expedited. The latest hearing focused on the steps taken by the authorities, including the formation of the SIT and the arrest of the deceased's husband.

The High Court's direction to submit a progress report indicates that the investigation will remain under judicial scrutiny, with the court set to review the steps taken by the SIT at the next hearing.

Advocate Vikas Kumar appeared on behalf of the petitioner.
