Hospitals across Jharkhand will now be required to prominently display rate charts listing charges for medical treatment and diagnostic tests. The move is aimed at improving transparency in healthcare costs and protecting patients from alleged overcharging.
Complaints of arbitrary billing by private hospitals, particularly for treatment and diagnostic services, have surfaced repeatedly. In Ranchi, several private hospitals have faced allegations of charging patients more than expected, with some patients and their families reportedly not being given clear information about diagnostic costs in advance.
There have also been reports of patients being charged as much as Rs 30,000 for blood tests, raising concerns over the lack of transparency in hospital billing.
Mandatory display of rate charts is expected to help patients and their families understand the costs of treatment and investigations before availing of the services.
However, displaying the rates alone may not be sufficient. The administration will also need to ensure that hospitals adhere to the displayed charges and that patients are not subjected to unauthorised or excessive billing.
