Cancer patients in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district will soon have access to specialist consultations and additional treatment facilities closer to home, with a dedicated oncology outpatient department (OPD) set to begin at Sadar Hospital.
The initiative, undertaken through the efforts of the Jharkhand government, the district administration and the health department, will provide cancer screening, specialist consultations, reviews of diagnostic reports and guidance on treatment. Chemotherapy facilities will also be made available at the hospital for eligible patients, subject to medical assessment and prescribed protocols.
According to an order issued by the office of the Civil Surgeon-cum-Deputy Superintendent of Sadar Hospital, the special oncology OPD will operate on the first and third Thursday of every month, from noon to 2 pm. Medical oncologist Dr. Shrikant Anne will attend to patients during these sessions.
A meeting to discuss the arrangements for the new service was held at the Deputy Superintendent’s chamber at Sadar Hospital on October 29. The meeting was chaired by Civil Surgeon-cum-Deputy Superintendent Dr. Anil Kumar and focused on the operation of the specialised OPD and the facilities to be provided to patients.
The initiative has received final approval from Ramgarh Deputy Commissioner Rituraj, according to the district administration.
Focus on early detection and specialist guidance
The oncology OPD will focus on the early identification of suspected cancer, medical consultations, treatment guidance and the review of previously conducted diagnostic tests.
Patients experiencing symptoms that may indicate cancer will be able to seek specialist advice, while those already undergoing treatment will have an opportunity to discuss their medical reports and receive guidance on further care.
The availability of a medical oncologist at the district hospital is expected to help patients understand their treatment options and determine the next steps in consultation with a specialist.
The hospital will also offer chemotherapy to eligible patients in accordance with medical advice and established treatment protocols. The availability of specific treatments will depend on the patient's condition and the facilities required.
Expected to ease travel and financial burdens
Cancer treatment often requires repeated hospital visits, and patients from smaller towns and rural areas may have to travel to larger cities for specialist consultations and treatment. Such journeys can increase expenses related to transport, accommodation and medical care.
The new oncology OPD is expected to reduce the need for some patients to travel outside the district merely to obtain specialist advice or have their diagnostic reports reviewed.
The initiative could be particularly beneficial for economically weaker and middle-income families by improving access to specialist consultations within Ramgarh. Earlier screening and appropriate medical guidance may also help patients seek further investigation and treatment without unnecessary delays.
However, patients requiring specialised procedures or advanced treatment unavailable at Sadar Hospital may still need referral to a higher medical centre.
Part of efforts to strengthen district healthcare
The district administration and health department aim to improve access to affordable, accessible and quality healthcare for residents. The introduction of the oncology OPD represents another step towards expanding specialist medical services at the district level.
With scheduled consultations twice a month and chemotherapy facilities planned at the hospital, the initiative is expected to strengthen local support for cancer patients and their families.
Patients planning to visit the oncology OPD should confirm the first or third Thursday schedule, consultation arrangements and chemotherapy availability with Sadar Hospital before travelling.
