The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Gumla, organised a legal awareness programme at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Gumla block under the National Legal Services Authority’s (NALSA) ‘Surakshit Bachpan’ initiative, focusing on child protection, legal rights and online safety.

The programme was conducted in accordance with the directions of NALSA and the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA), Ranchi, under the guidance of Ajit Kumar Singh, Principal District and Sessions Judge-cum-chairman of DLSA, Gumla. Its objective was to educate students about child-related offences, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and cybercrime, while informing them about the legal safeguards available to protect their rights and well-being.

Gumla Cyber Cell in-charge Nikhil Anand and Sub-Inspector Tarun Kumar briefed the students on the growing risks associated with internet use and social media. They advised students against sharing personal information, passwords, one-time passwords (OTPs) or private photographs with strangers.

They also urged students to report online threats, fraud, blackmail or harassment to trusted adults and the appropriate authorities rather than remaining silent. The officers emphasised responsible digital behaviour and the importance of remaining vigilant while using online platforms.

Panel advocate Sudhir Kumar Pandey and Legal Aid Defence Counsel Indu Kumari explained different forms of offences against children, their legal rights and ways to seek protection from exploitation and abuse. They outlined key provisions of the POCSO Act, which provides legal protection to children against sexual offences.

The students were encouraged to speak up without fear or hesitation if they experienced inappropriate behaviour, abuse or harassment, and to seek help from their parents, teachers or the relevant authorities.

Shambhu Singh, a member of the Permanent Lok Adalat, explained the roles and responsibilities of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and support persons in protecting children, providing care and facilitating rehabilitation. He highlighted the legal and institutional mechanisms available to assist children in need and those facing difficult circumstances.

Singh also explained how support persons help children understand their difficulties, access appropriate assistance and receive emotional and other necessary support during legal and related proceedings.

The programme underscored that safeguarding children's rights, dignity and security is a collective responsibility. Students were encouraged to recognise violations of their rights, oppose inappropriate conduct and approach the appropriate authorities whenever they or another child needed help.

Through the initiative, DLSA Gumla aims to strengthen awareness of child protection laws and equip students with practical knowledge to recognise and respond to risks involving abuse, exploitation and cybercrime.
