The ‘Khet Bachao’ (Save the Fields) campaign was formally launched on Thursday in Toto, Gumla district, with a clear goal — protecting farmers’ livelihoods, preserving soil fertility and encouraging the wise use of natural resources. Organised jointly by the District Agriculture Department and ATMA, Gumla, the campaign saw 155 farmers take part. It will run until 30 November 2026.

The District Council Vice-President attended as the chief guest. Also present on the stage were Dr Brijesh Pandey, Senior Scientist and Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gumla, the Block Development Officer, DYPD-ATMA, the District Agriculture Officer and other officials.

Dr Pandey spoke plainly to the farmers about the damage caused by unbalanced fertiliser use, burning of crop residues, soil erosion and the shortage of organic matter. These practices, he explained, harm soil health, reduce yields and ultimately hit farmers’ incomes. He urged them to adopt practical, science-based measures — soil testing followed by balanced fertiliser application, use of organic and green manures, crop rotation and moisture conservation. He also highlighted the role of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in introducing new techniques and offering scientific solutions to farmers’ problems.

Under the campaign, special focus will be given to soil and water conservation, crop residue management, promoting biodiversity and encouraging crops suited to local conditions. Officials emphasised that these steps will not only protect today’s harvests but also keep the land productive for future generations. They will help lower production costs and make farming more environmentally friendly.

Through the Khet Bachao campaign, the district aims to strengthen coordination between farmers, scientists and the agriculture department, and to promote scientific, sustainable farming practices across Gumla.
