Panic spread among students after a fire broke out at the State Library near Firayalal Chowk in Ranchi on Tuesday, sending students and others inside the facility rushing towards the exit.

The incident triggered a brief commotion inside the library as people scrambled to move to safety after noticing the fire. Those present immediately began efforts to douse the flames, and the fire was brought under control before it could cause a larger incident.

No casualties have been reported in the incident.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known. An assessment is also underway to determine the extent of damage caused inside the library.

The incident has, meanwhile, raised questions about fire safety arrangements at the facility, particularly because the library is frequented by a large number of students who spend several hours there preparing for competitive examinations and other academic pursuits.

While the quick response from people present at the library helped prevent the situation from escalating, the incident has highlighted the importance of adequate fire prevention and emergency evacuation arrangements at crowded public study facilities.

Further assessment and an inquiry into the cause of the fire and the existing safety measures are expected to provide more clarity on the incident.
