Gumla Police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the alleged possession, sale and consumption of a substance suspected to be brown sugar, as part of an ongoing crackdown on drug-related activities in the district.

The accused has been identified as Nikhil Lakra, son of the late Neeraj Rajesh Lakra, a resident of Puggu Champanagar in Gumla.

Gumla police station in-charge Dinesh Kumar shared details of the arrest during a press briefing. According to him, Gumla police station Case No. 318/26 was registered on August 18, 2026, in connection with the matter.

Police have invoked Sections 21(b), 22(b) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused was arrested and subsequently sent to judicial custody.

Investigation focuses on source of drug

Police are now investigating how the suspected narcotic substance reached the accused and whether other individuals or a wider network are involved.

Investigators are also working to identify people allegedly involved in supplying narcotic substances in the area. The police are examining possible links that could help establish the source and distribution chain.

The arrest is part of the police's continuing efforts to curb both the supply and consumption of narcotic substances in Gumla. Authorities said strict legal action would be taken against those involved in the illegal drug trade.

Police have also indicated that the investigation will continue to determine the wider network, if any, behind the alleged drug activity.
