Five Arrested for Rs 40.50 Lakh Robbery by Men Posing as GST Officers in Deoghar

Police have arrested five people in connection with the alleged robbery of Rs 40.50 lakh on the Tabhaghat-Dardmara main road under Jasidih police station in Deoghar district.

According to police, the accused allegedly posed as GST officials and used a Scorpio to intercept the motorcycle of complainant Vikram Chaudhary. They allegedly abducted Chaudhary and his employee before taking away cash, mobile phones and a laptop.

A case was registered at Jasidih police station on August 8, 2026, under Sections 126(2), 134, 204, 205, 307 and 310(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Following the complaint, police formed a special investigation team and launched raids based on technical evidence and other inputs.

The five arrested accused have been identified as Kumod Poddar, 34, from Jamui; Sanjay Kumar Singh, 55, from Banka; Shiv Shankar Kumar, 28, from Banka; Ghanshyam Yadav, 47, from Banka; and Vinod Prasad Yadav, 38, from Jamui.

Rs 4.30 lakh, laptop recovered

During the investigation, police recovered several items allegedly connected with the crime.

A Scorpio bearing registration number JH01BP-4780, two mobile phones, two plastic police batons and a red-and-blue board carrying the word “Police” were recovered from Sanjay Kumar Singh.

Police also recovered Rs 4.30 lakh in cash and the damaged Dell laptop belonging to the complainant from Kumod Poddar. A mobile phone seized from Shiv Shankar Kumar allegedly contained a route map linked to the incident, which investigators are examining as part of the probe.

SP Praveen Pushkar said the accused were identified through technical investigation and other available inputs. He said the recovered items were traced during raids carried out on the basis of information obtained during interrogation.

Police are continuing efforts to recover the remaining stolen money and determine whether other people were involved in the alleged robbery.

Accused have previous criminal cases

Police said some of the arrested individuals have also faced cases in the past. Cases have been registered at Simultala and Dhanwar police stations under various provisions of the BNS.

Kumod Poddar, in particular, has previous cases registered at Dumka, Halsa Teterhat and Deoghar Nagar police stations under provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Bihar Prohibition Act and Indian Electricity Act, according to police.

The investigation is continuing, with police focusing on tracing the remaining stolen cash, verifying the role of each accused and identifying any additional members of the alleged gang.

The raid team included Sadar SDPO Kuldeep Kumar, Jasidih police station in-charge Deepak Kumar, officers Amar Kumar, Ramanuj Singh, Sandeep Krishna, Priyaranjan Kumar, Prashant Kumar and Abhay Kumar, along with personnel from the technical branch and armed police forces.
