Ranchi Traffic Police Tightens Speed Checks, SVD Cameras to Issue Automatic E-Challans

Drivers who regularly speed on Ranchi's roads will now have to be more cautious, as the traffic police have stepped up automated monitoring across the city. Vehicles crossing the prescribed speed limit can now be detected by Speed Violation Detector (SVD) cameras, with e-challans issued automatically.

The Ranchi Traffic Police have installed SVD cameras at several major roads and sensitive locations across the capital. According to the traffic police, the cameras will monitor vehicles and detect violations when they cross the prescribed speed limits of 40 kmph and 60 kmph on designated stretches.

Once a vehicle is detected travelling above the permitted speed, the camera captures and identifies its registration number. An online challan can then be generated, with the penalty reportedly going up to Rs 1,000. The vehicle owner is expected to receive information about the challan through an SMS on the mobile number registered with the vehicle.

The automated system is intended to make speed enforcement more consistent and reduce dependence on manual checking by traffic personnel. It could also help authorities monitor roads where speeding poses a higher risk to pedestrians and other motorists.

The traffic police have issued posters and awareness material to inform motorists about the new monitoring system and the applicable speed limits.

Officials have also warned that repeated violations could lead to stricter action. According to the information released by the traffic police, motorists who violate speed regulations more than three times may face action against their driving licence, including possible cancellation.

The introduction of SVD cameras comes as Ranchi continues to see increasing traffic movement on major roads. Speeding is particularly dangerous on stretches with heavy pedestrian movement, intersections and roads shared by two-wheelers, cars and public transport.

Motorists are therefore advised to pay attention to the speed-limit signs installed on different road stretches rather than assuming that the same limit applies throughout the city. With automated detection now in place, drivers will need to follow the prescribed limits even when traffic police personnel are not physically present on the road.
