LoP Gandhi writes to J'khand CM Soren, urges him to meet protesting students, take appropriate action

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday wrote to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, urging him to personally meet representatives of students protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and take appropriate steps to resolve their concerns.

The appeal comes as the students' agitation in Ranchi entered its 24th day. The protesters have been raising allegations of irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), demanding corrective action and accountability.

A fourth round of talks between representatives of the Jharkhand government and the protesting students is scheduled for Monday. The outcome of the meeting is expected to play a key role in determining the next course of the agitation.

In his letter to Soren, Gandhi said the Congress believes that the constitutional right to peaceful protest is an important pillar of democracy. He said the party had extended its support to students protesting alleged paper leaks and irregularities in the education system in recent months.

Gandhi also criticised what he described as the growing influence of the RSS and BJP over India's education system, alleging that it had been turned into a means of exploitation and oppression of students. These political allegations are part of his broader criticism of the education system at the national level.

Referring to the ongoing protest at Ranchi's Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, Gandhi acknowledged that the Jharkhand government had initiated dialogue with the students through a committee constituted by the Chief Minister. He also said there appeared to be agreement on several of the demands raised by the protesters.

However, he pointed out that the agitation was continuing and that some students were observing an indefinite hunger strike.

“I am writing to suggest that you personally meet with representatives of the protesting students. This will help reinforce the government's commitment to resolve their remaining concerns,” Gandhi said.

He further stressed the importance of addressing the concerns of young people, saying that India's youth represent the country's future and should receive support during the current situation.

The students have been camping at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi and demanding strict action over alleged examination irregularities. Their agitation has continued despite several rounds of discussions with government representatives.

The protesters have also announced plans to lay siege to the Chief Minister's residence on August 20, raising the possibility of further escalation if a mutually acceptable solution is not reached.

With another round of talks scheduled, attention is now focused on whether the government and student representatives can narrow their differences and find a resolution to the issues that have kept the protest going for nearly a month.
