12th Deoghar District Athletics Championship Begins, 372 Athletes Take Part

The 12th Deoghar District Athletics Championship 2026 got off to an energetic start at KKN Stadium on Tuesday, with 372 athletes from across the district taking part in the opening day’s competitions.

Organised across Under-14, Under-16, Under-18, Under-20 and Senior categories for both boys and girls, the two-day championship is providing young athletes an important platform to test their skills in a range of track and field events.

The meet is particularly significant for athletes aiming to progress to higher levels of competition. Those selected from the Under-14 and Under-16 categories will represent Deoghar at the Jharkhand State Athletics Championship in Dhanbad on August 21 and 22. Athletes selected in the Under-18 and Under-20 categories will compete at the Jharkhand Athletics Championship to be held in Ranchi in September.

The district championship will conclude on August 12. Dr Sunil Khawade, president of the Deoghar District Athletic Association and District Olympic Association, is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony as the chief guest.

Ashish Jha, president of the Deoghar District Athletics Planning Commission, said the district has considerable sporting potential and that the performances seen on the opening day reflected the talent available locally.

“Deoghar has no shortage of sporting talent. Several promising athletes have performed well in this championship, and we hope the selected players will make the district proud at the upcoming state-level competitions,” Jha said.

The championship also saw the presence of Deoghar District Athletic Association vice-president Amit Soni, joint secretary Bunty Nandan Singh, Rahul Kumar, Pramod Yadav, Deoghar District Athletics Association and Khelo India coach Deepak Kumar, executive member Rajni, and technical committee members Sahil and Aman, besides other officials and association members.

Athletes competed with enthusiasm throughout the opening day, producing strong performances across various events. Following the district-level meet, the selected athletes are expected to step up their preparations for the state championships, where they will get an opportunity to compete against some of Jharkhand’s leading young athletes.
