Rising Crowd, Changing Arrangements: New Overbridge to Ease Jal Arpan at Baba Dham

Shekhar Suman/Deoghar: Devotees visiting the world-famous Baba Baidyanath Dham during this year's Shravani Mela are likely to experience a more organised and convenient darshan system. The newly constructed overbridge inside the temple premises is being seen not merely as an infrastructure project but as a major step towards improving crowd management and streamlining the flow of pilgrims.
Once operational, the new arrangement will allow coupon holders and general devotees to move through separate routes, reducing congestion inside the temple complex and accelerating the process of Jal Arpan.
Every year, millions of devotees from across the country and abroad visit Baba Dham during the Shravani Mela. On several occasions, the rush becomes so intense that queues stretch for kilometres, forcing pilgrims to wait for hours. Managing such massive crowds has remained one of the biggest challenges for the temple administration, particularly because both coupon and general queues have so far been moving through the same passage, often leading to confusion and overcrowding.
Keeping these challenges in mind, the temple administration has redesigned the queue management system with the help of the new overbridge. Under the revised arrangement, coupon holders and general devotees will proceed towards the temple through separate routes. The two streams will be regulated and merged near the entry point to the sanctum, ensuring a smooth movement of devotees and preventing excessive crowding at any single location. The administration believes that the new system will make the darshan process faster and more orderly. Devotees are expected to get an opportunity to offer prayers and perform Jal Arpan in less time, while problems such as jostling and prolonged waiting are also likely to decline. During the Shravani Mela, the arrangement is expected to bring significant relief to lakhs of pilgrims.

A Solution to a Long-Standing Issue

Devotees and various social organisations have been demanding separate routes for coupon holders and general pilgrims for several years. They argued that operating both queues through the same passage often created confusion and disrupted crowd management. The new overbridge is being viewed as an important step towards resolving this long-standing issue.

Strengthening Security Measures

The new arrangement is also expected to improve security management. Separate queues will make it easier for police and administrative officials to monitor crowd movement. In case of an emergency, the administration will be able to manage evacuation and crowd control more effectively.

What the Temple In-Charge Says

Temple In-Charge-cum-SDO Ravi Kumar said that ensuring the convenience of devotees remains the administration's top priority. Considering the growing number of pilgrims visiting Baba Dham every year, the new overbridge has been constructed to make the darshan system more organised and pilgrim-friendly.
