RSS Office Attack Probe: Main Accused Escapes Police Custody, Recaptured After Encounter

Ranchi: The investigation into the petrol bomb attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) state office in Ranchi took a dramatic turn on Thursday after the prime accused escaped from police custody, only to be recaptured following a brief encounter in which he sustained bullet injuries.

According to police, the accused, identified as Saif, had been arrested in connection with Wednesday's petrol bomb attack on the RSS office in Nivaranpur and was being held in the lock-up at Kotwali police station. He allegedly managed to flee from custody on Thursday afternoon, triggering a massive search operation.

Police said Saif was eventually tracked down in the Mandar area. During the chase, he allegedly snatched a firearm from a police personnel and opened fire while attempting to escape. The police retaliated in self-defence, injuring him before taking him back into custody.

The injured accused was later admitted to a hospital for treatment. His condition has not been officially disclosed.

The case relates to the petrol bomb attack on the RSS office under the Chutia police station limits in the early hours of Wednesday. CCTV footage reportedly captured two youths hurling petrol bombs at the premises. While the attack caused panic, no one was injured and the building did not suffer significant damage.

Based on a complaint filed by Jharkhand RSS state head Narsingh Kumar, Chutia police registered an FIR, stating that the attack endangered lives and appeared to be part of a serious conspiracy. Investigators have also invoked provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in the case.

The RSS has sought enhanced security at its Ranchi office and demanded the establishment of a permanent police picket, citing the regular movement of its office-bearers and volunteers.

So far, three accused have been arrested in connection with the attack. Investigating agencies are probing the motive behind the incident, the network of those involved and whether the attack was linked to a larger conspiracy. Police said the investigation is continuing on multiple fronts.
