
Jamshedpur: A shocking incident unfolded near Dhatkidih pond under Bistupur police station area of Jamshedpur on Thursday afternoon when an elderly man allegedly attempted self-immolation following prolonged family disputes.
His life was saved due to the prompt intervention of a local youth and nearby residents.According to eyewitnesses, Sattar Khan, a resident of Dhatkidih A Block, arrived near the pond carrying petrol. Before anyone could understand his intentions, he allegedly poured the fuel over himself and set himself ablaze.
The flames spread rapidly, creating panic among people in the area.
Displaying remarkable courage, Mohammad Islam, who works at a vehicle washing facility near the pond, rushed to the spot and immediately began efforts to extinguish the fire.
With assistance from local residents, he managed to bring the blaze under control and safely rescue the severely injured man.
Police from Bistupur police station reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident and shifted the victim to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) for treatment. Doctors said the elderly man has sustained extensive burn injuries and remains in critical condition.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that Khan had been under considerable mental stress due to an ongoing family dispute. His family members later arrived at the hospital after being informed about the incident.Police have recovered partially burnt clothes and other materials from the site and have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the desperate act.Officials and local residents have praised the timely action and presence of mind shown by Mohammad Islam, whose swift response is believed to have prevented a tragic loss of life.
