
Deoghar: In a major crackdown on cybercrime, Deoghar Police arrested three cyber criminals for allegedly cheating people by posing as customer care executives and officials of various online platforms and digital services. The action was carried out on Tuesday under the direction of Superintendent of Police Praveen Pushkar and the guidance of Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Prasad Mahto.Police received information that the accused were impersonating customer care representatives of Flipkart and Amazon, officials of Airtel Payments Bank, and PhonePe customer care agents on Google to defraud people. They were also allegedly cheating victims by promising benefits under the PM Kisan scheme and offering loans.Based on the tip-off, police conducted a raid and arrested three accused. Preliminary examination of the seized mobile phones and SIM cards revealed several clues linked to cyber fraud. Police said none of the accused had any previous criminal record.
The arrested persons have been identified as 36-year-old Santosh Kumar Das and 22-year-old Shekhar Kumar Das, both residents of Dumrathara village under Karoun police station limits, and 22-year-old Suman Kumar Das, a resident of Navapatro village under Madhupur police station area.
During the investigation, it was found that the accused posed as fake Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm customer care executives and IRCTC officials. They lured victims with cashback offers, persuaded them to create PhonePe gift cards, and then redeemed the cards to siphon off the money. They also allegedly impersonated Airtel Payments Bank officials and cheated customers on the pretext of resolving banking-related issues through the Airtel Thanks app. Police seized four mobile phones, three SIM cards, five debit cards and ?3,000 in cash from their possession. All the items have been confiscated, and further investigation is underway.
The operation was carried out jointly by teams from the Cyber Police Station, Pathrol Police Station, Karoun Police Station and Deoghar Police. Police said the drive against cybercrime will continue in the future.
