Infant Thrown from Moving Train Dies, Passengers Save Another Child in Shocking Incident

Jamshedpur: In a deeply disturbing incident that has left passengers and railway officials stunned, a woman allegedly threw her one-and-a-half-month-old baby out of a moving train, resulting in the infant’s death, and then attempted to hurl her three-year-old child before alert co-passengers intervened and prevented another tragedy.

The horrific incident took place on Wednesday aboard the Howrah–Barbil Jan Shatabdi Express (Train No. 12021) between Rajkharsawan and Mahalimarup stations under the Chakradharpur railway division.

According to eyewitnesses, passengers were travelling normally when the woman suddenly got up from her seat, carried her sleeping infant to the train window, and shockingly threw the child out of the speeding coach.

The act unfolded within seconds, leaving fellow passengers horrified and helpless. Chaos erupted inside the compartment as screams filled the air.  Moments later, the woman allegedly attempted to throw her three-year-old child out of the same window, but vigilant passengers acted swiftly, restraining her and rescuing the toddler.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) were immediately alerted. The woman and her husband were kept under watch until the train reached Chaibasa, where authorities took her into custody. Following the incident, officials launched a search operation along the railway tracks between Mahalimarup and Rajkharsawan.

After hours of searching through bushes and surrounding areas, the infant’s body was recovered. Police identified the accused as Mudravati Gop, a resident of Majhgaon in West Singhbhum district.  Her husband, Shahabuddin, is reportedly from West Bengal.

Investigators said the couple had married after eloping nearly four years ago, after which the woman’s name was changed to Hasina Begum, and they had been living in Hyderabad. Authorities are now probing whether mental health issues, postpartum depression, family conflict, or social pressures may have played a role in the tragic act.

Officials said a psychological evaluation of the woman is likely to be conducted as part of the investigation. The chilling episode has sparked outrage and grief, raising urgent concerns over maternal mental health and the unseen emotional struggles that can lead to devastating consequences.
