Istanbul- Aston Villa lifted their first European trophy in 44 years after defeating Freiburg in emphatic fashion to win their maiden UEFA Europa League title at Be?ikta? Park in Istanbul.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers sealed a memorable victory for Unai Emery’s side, as Villa became the 31st club to win the UEFA Cup/Europa League and the sixth English team to achieve the feat.
The triumph also added another remarkable chapter to Emery’s legacy in the competition. The Spanish manager became the first coach to win the tournament with three different clubs — Sevilla, Villarreal and now Aston Villa.
Freiburg, playing in their first major European final, started brightly and hoped to script history by claiming the club’s first major title. Villa, meanwhile, were chasing their first silverware in three decades.
With nerves evident on both sides in the early exchanges, clear-cut chances were limited in the opening stages. However, the game burst into life in the 42nd minute when Tielemans brilliantly volleyed home a precise delivery from Morgan Rogers following a short corner routine.
Villa struck another blow just before halftime. Emiliano Buendia picked up the ball outside the penalty area, cut onto his left foot and curled a superb effort into the far corner to double the advantage with virtually the final kick of the first half.
The Premier League side continued to dominate after the break and added a third goal before the hour mark. Buendia once again turned creator, weaving his way down the left flank before setting up Rogers for a simple close-range finish.
Villa nearly extended the lead further when Amadou Onana’s header from a John McGinn corner struck the post, but Emery’s men comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to seal a famous European success.
Despite the defeat, Freiburg earned praise for their spirited campaign and will now look ahead to competing in the UEFA Conference League play-offs next season.
