Major Action Against Cyber Fraud Gang in Deoghar, Two Arrested

Deoghar: In a major crackdown on cybercrime in the district, police have arrested two cyber fraudsters on 20 May 2026 following continuous action directed by Superintendent of Police Praveen Pushkar and under the guidance of Deputy Superintendent of Police Raja Kumar Mitra. The operation has exposed an active online cheating gang operating in the area.According to police, a tip-off revealed that certain individuals in Deoghar district were impersonating customer care executives of Flipkart and Amazon, officials of Airtel Payment Bank, and representatives linked with Google Pay and PhonePe. They were also cheating people in the name of PM Kisan Yojana and loan facilities by using fake mobile numbers to lure victims into online fraud. Acting on the information, police conducted a swift raid.
During the raid, two cyber criminals were arrested. Preliminary investigation of the recovered mobile phones and SIM cards confirmed their involvement in cyber fraud activities. Police officials stated that the accused used fake identities to mislead people with cashback offers and refunds, and executed fraud through gift card redemption methods.The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohan Das, aged 32 years, son of Bishan Das, resident of Barguniya under Devipur police station, Deoghar district, and Suraj Kumar Yadav, aged 24 years, son of Danarbad, under Chitra police station, Deoghar district. Police confirmed that no prior criminal record has been found against them so far.Investigation further revealed that the accused used to make fraudulent calls in the name of Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and IRCTC, offering cashback schemes and tricking users into generating PhonePe gift cards, which were later redeemed for cheating. They also targeted victims in the name of Airtel Payment Bank, claiming account deactivation and reactivation services to commit fraud.Items recovered include three mobile phones, four SIM cards, and one reflective SIM card. The operation was carried out by a joint police team from Cyber Police Station Deoghar led by Inspector Amar Kumar Ram along with teams from Sarwan, Devipur, and Chitra police stations. Police have now intensified investigation to trace other members of this network.
