New Delhi/Ranchi: In a major relief for former Jharkhand minister and senior Indian National Congress leader Alamgir Alam, the Supreme Court of India has granted him bail in a money laundering case being investigated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The apex court also granted bail to his personal secretary Sanjeev Lal, who was arrested in connection with the same case.
Alamgir Alam had been lodged in jail for nearly two years after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a high-profile money laundering investigation that created major political ripples in Jharkhand ahead of the Assembly elections. His arrest had become one of the most discussed political developments in the state, especially as it came during a politically sensitive period.
The former minister had earlier moved the Jharkhand High Court seeking bail, but the High Court had rejected his plea, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing investigation. Challenging that decision, Alamgir Alam approached the Supreme Court, which after hearing arguments from both sides granted him relief.
According to legal sources, the Supreme Court took note of the prolonged period of incarceration and other legal considerations while granting bail to the Congress leader and his aide. Detailed conditions imposed by the court are expected to be made available once the formal order is released.
The ED had arrested Alamgir Alam in connection with alleged financial irregularities and suspected laundering of funds linked to government contracts and transactions. During the investigation, the agency had conducted multiple raids at premises linked to his associates and recovered large amounts of cash, triggering a political storm in the state.
Following the Supreme Court’s order, Alamgir Alam is expected to be released from jail soon after completing legal formalities and furnishing bail bonds before the concerned court.
The development has sparked political reactions across Jharkhand. Congress leaders welcomed the court’s decision, calling it a victory of justice and due process. Party workers and supporters expressed relief and said the senior leader would now be able to actively participate in public life again.
Meanwhile, opposition parties maintained that the investigation should continue independently and asserted that the bail order does not amount to acquittal.
Political observers believe the Supreme Court’s decision could have significant implications for the state’s political landscape, especially with Congress attempting to strengthen its position in Jharkhand after recent electoral challenges.
