Daltonganj records season’s highest maximum temp. of 44.6°C

Jamshedpur: Jharkhand remained in the grip of an intense heatwave on Saturday, with Daltonganj in Palamu district emerging as the hottest location in the state.

The town recorded a blistering 44.6°C—this season’s highest so far—standing nearly four degrees above the normal mark, according to meteorological observations.

Notorious for its harsh summers, the Palamu headquarters once again lived up to its reputation, as soaring temperatures turned daily life into a struggle under relentless heat.

The sweltering conditions were not confined to a single district.

Large parts of the state reeled under oppressive heat, with West Singhbhum and Bokaro witnessing temperatures hovering around 42°C.

The prolonged absence of rainfall has only worsened the situation, prompting weather officials to extend the heatwave alert into the coming days.

Hot and dry winds sweeping across regions, including Kolhan, further intensified the discomfort, leaving residents exposed to punishing conditions.

Jamshedpur recorded a maximum temperature of 40.3°C—slightly above normal—although it had already experienced a peak of 42°C earlier in the week.

Ranchi also endured severe heat, registering 40.8°C, over three degrees higher than its seasonal average.

Neighbouring areas reported similarly high readings, with Seraikela at 42.6°C and Koderma close to 42°C. Gumla and Hazaribagh were not far behind, each recording temperatures near 41°C, highlighting the widespread impact of the heatwave across Jharkhand.

Despite the prevailing conditions, weathermen have indicated a potential change in weather from April 26 onwards.

Isolated pockets in north-eastern and adjoining central parts of the state may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.

Other regions are also likely to witness similar, though less intense, weather activity.

These developments are expected to continue through April 27 and 28, offering a slight respite from the relentless heat.

Until then, Jharkhand continues to endure an unforgiving summer, with residents preparing for more scorching days ahead.
