Undertrial leaps to death from MGM Hospital’s seventh floor in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: A chilling incident unfolded at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital on Friday when an undertrial prisoner ended his life by jumping from the seventh floor of the building, triggering serious concerns over custodial supervision and hospital security.

The deceased, identified as Ashok Kumar, was undergoing treatment in the hospital’s designated prisoner ward.  Officials revealed that he had a history of self-harm and had earlier attempted suicide inside jail by slitting his throat, but was rescued in time and shifted to the hospital for further medical care.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred when Kumar was being escorted by police personnel for a medical consultation.  In a sudden and unexpected move, he managed to free himself from their grip, rushed towards the edge of the floor, and jumped before anyone could intervene.

He sustained critical injuries and died on the spot. The body has been sent for post-mortem, while police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact sequence of events. Sources indicate that Kumar was under mental distress and receiving treatment, which may have contributed to his actions.

The incident has now put a spotlight on the adequacy of safety measures and monitoring systems within the hospital, especially for high-risk inmates. Authorities are likely to review security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
