US Tourist Alleges Assault in Karnataka; Accused and Homestay Owner Arrested

Bengaluru — Disturbing details have surfaced in a case involving the alleged sexual assault of an American tourist in Karnataka’s Kodagu district. Based on the survivor’s complaint, police say a man identified as Vrijesh Kumar allegedly spiked her drink and assaulted her after she lost consciousness.

The woman had been staying at a homestay in Kutta village when the incident occurred. According to her statement, the accused mixed an intoxicating substance into a sweet beverage before giving it to her. She reported losing consciousness shortly after consuming it, and alleges she was assaulted during that period.

The case also implicates the homestay owner, Vishal, who is accused of attempting to suppress the incident. Police say he allegedly restricted the victim from contacting anyone for nearly three days and even disabled internet access at the property.

After managing to leave under the pretext of travelling to Mysuru, the survivor contacted the United States Embassy in India, which then alerted local authorities. A formal case was subsequently registered in Mysuru.

Following the complaint, both the accused and the homestay owner were arrested. A local court has remanded them to judicial custody until May 3, while the investigation continues.

Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs also visited the area after the case came to light. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara acknowledged that there were initial attempts to hush up the matter but said swift police action prevented that.

He emphasised that strict enforcement of licensing norms for homestays is essential, noting that violations would invite legal consequences. He also pointed out that such incidents harm the country’s image, particularly when foreign visitors are involved, and stressed the need for firm action under the law.

The district police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further details will be disclosed as it progresses.
