Ranchi: The Jharkhand Assembly witnessed heated scenes on Tuesday as opposition legislators staged protests over what they described as the deteriorating law and order situation and growing corruption in the state.
As the session began, MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party rushed into the well of the House carrying placards and raising slogans. They demanded an immediate discussion on corruption and public safety issues.
Tensions escalated when Nirmal Mahto of the All Jharkhand Students Union was ordered out of the House by the Speaker and escorted away by marshals following a confrontation during the debate. However, after discussions among members, he was later permitted to return.
Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi launched a strong attack on the government, alleging that corruption had become widespread and claiming that government work was allegedly being carried out only after payment of bribes.
Marandi also raised concerns over recent incidents that he said reflected poor law and order, including firing on labour union leaders in Dumka, an alleged assault on a devotee at the Rajrappa Temple, and reported misbehaviour by a Deputy Commissioner with women protesters during a Women’s Day programme in Giridih.
Taking a swipe at the government’s slogan of “Abua Sarkar” (our government), he said the administration had instead turned into a “Babua Sarkar”, suggesting that officials were running the system.
According to him, criminals in the state had become emboldened while officials were acting without accountability. He insisted that the Assembly should hold a detailed debate on these issues before proceeding with other business.
Responding to the criticism, Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishore rejected the allegations and asserted that the law and order situation in the state remained under control. He said the government was following a strict zero-tolerance approach towards corruption.
Kishore also challenged the opposition to provide concrete examples of corruption, assuring that the government would take action if credible cases were presented.
He further clarified that Assembly proceedings are conducted according to established rules and that discussions are taken up only after approval by the Business Advisory Committee.
The atmosphere in the House turned even more tense during an argument between Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu and MLA Nirmal Mahto. As the exchange grew heated, the Speaker ordered Mahto to be marshalled out.
However, after intervention by the Finance Minister and requests from opposition members, the MLA was later allowed to rejoin the proceedings.
For a considerable period, members from both treasury and opposition benches stood facing each other, resulting in a disruption that stalled the Assembly’s normal functioning.
