Chaibasa: In a horrific incident that has shaken Jharkhand, a woman and her minor son were allegedly burnt alive by villagers who accused her of practising witchcraft in West Singhbhum district, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The tragedy took place late Tuesday night within the jurisdiction of Kumardungi police station. Police reports indicate that the accused forcibly entered the family’s residence, doused the woman and her child with petrol, and set them on fire, leading to their immediate deaths.
The woman’s husband suffered serious burn injuries while trying to rescue them. He has been admitted to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition.
Initial findings reveal that rumours had been spreading in the village for days, blaming the family for certain illnesses and incidents. The woman was reportedly labelled a “witch,” which allegedly triggered the violent assault.
Police stated that about 12 villagers conspired to carry out the crime. On Wednesday morning, all 12 accused presented themselves at the Kumardungi police station and surrendered. They are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation.
Senior officers visited the scene, and additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain order. A forensic team has also begun collecting evidence. An FIR is being registered under sections related to murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, and other grave charges.
Authorities have launched a detailed probe to determine the precise sequence of events and identify any other individuals involved. The case underscores the continuing problem of witch-hunting in certain rural areas, despite strict laws prohibiting such acts.
