Dhanbad – A house collapsed due to land subsidence in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district on Monday, sparking panic in the Jogta police station area.
The house, owned by Kalyani Devi, was reduced to rubble. Fortunately, her family escaped moments before the collapse after sensing tremors and hearing a loud noise.
“All our belongings are buried under the debris—we have nothing left,” Devi said, demanding immediate relief, food, shelter, and compensation from authorities and Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).
Residents reported that large cracks and deep pits had appeared across the area. Local resident Indradev Bhuiyan blamed the administration and BCCL for repeated negligence, noting that complaints had gone unanswered for years.
BCCL officials visited the site but declined to comment.
Dhanbad has long struggled with underground mine fires and subsidence, which have displaced families and damaged property for decades. Monday’s incident once again raised concerns over the safety of those living in high-risk coalfield areas.
