Ranchi: In April, during the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) convention, party patriarch and father Shibu Soren entrusted Hemant Soren with greater responsibilities. Few imagined that within just four months, Hemant would face the heartbreak of bidding farewell to his father, affectionately known as Dishom Guru. After days of treatment at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Shibu Soren passed away on August 4. The Chief Minister shared the news with the public through an emotional message on social media.
In an era where professional demands often prevent children from being present during their parents’ final moments—something the COVID-19 pandemic brought into sharp focus—Hemant Soren stood out. Not only did he personally perform his father’s last rites in their native village, but he also stayed to observe all associated traditions with sincerity and respect.
Even amid personal grief, Hemant continued to oversee governance, managing state affairs remotely to ensure smooth functioning. With a steady flow of political leaders, supporters, and citizens visiting Nemra, he has balanced mourning and public duty—a rare quality in contemporary politics.
Hemant’s political journey has been one of resilience. Initially seen as reluctant in politics, he has made remarkable comebacks. Despite losing power in 2014, he strengthened JMM’s position in subsequent elections. From 18 seats in 2009 to 19 in 2014, the party rose to 30 seats in 2019, defeating the BJP, with even Chief Minister Raghubar Das losing his own seat. In 2024, Hemant led JMM to 34 seats, while the BJP dropped to 21, cementing Santhal Pargana as a party stronghold.
Kalpana Soren, Hemant’s wife, has emerged as a powerful political voice, complementing his leadership and becoming a challenge for the opposition. Her growing popularity has subtly reshaped the party’s leadership dynamics.
Hemant’s brief imprisonment during an Enforcement Directorate probe, followed by a sweeping electoral win, reinforced his image as a people’s leader. His appearance during that time, reminiscent of Shibu Soren’s iconic style, evoked a sense of continuity in leadership.
As thousands visit Nemra to pay tribute to Dishom Guru, Hemant’s ability to hold together his family, his party, and governance in such a difficult moment reflects his political maturity. He may not replace the towering figure of his father, but he is carrying forward Guruji’s legacy with strength, patience, and compassion.
