New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Monday to pay homage to Shibu Soren, the founder of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, who passed away earlier in the day at the age of 81.
Soren had been under medical care at the hospital for over a month due to kidney-related issues and had also suffered a stroke. According to hospital authorities, he had been on life support for the last month.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi met Chief Minister Hemant Soren, son of the late leader, and other members of the family to personally offer his condolences.
Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay my respects to Shri Shibu Soren Ji. Met his family as well. My thoughts are with Hemant Ji, Kalpana Ji, and all those who admired Shibu Soren Ji.”
Modi also described the veteran leader as a grassroots icon who dedicated his life to the upliftment of tribal communities and the marginalised. “Deeply saddened by his demise. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Ji and conveyed my condolences. Om Shanti,” he added.
Popularly known as "Guruji" or "Dishom Guru," Shibu Soren was a towering figure in tribal politics and played a significant role in the creation of the state of Jharkhand.
