Varun learnt tailoring for 3 months for 'Sui Dhaaga'

Actor Varun Dhawan went beyond simply preparing for his role in "Sui Dhaaga - Made in India" and spent three months learning the craft of tailoring to convincingly portray a professional tailor on screen.

Varun plays Mauji in the upcoming film, which also stars Anushka Sharma. He said he understood early on that convincing the audience that he was a skilled "Masterji" would require more than acting alone.

"I knew that I had a task at hand. I knew I had to master the art to convince people that I am a real 'Masterji'. Darshan (the costume designer) and Noor Bhai (the tailor on the sets) helped me a lot and I gave it three months to learn this skill," Varun said in a statement.

The preparation involved regular tailoring classes, sometimes lasting two hours and sometimes stretching to four hours. The process was far from easy in the beginning, with Varun admitting that repeated mistakes left him frustrated.

"It was frustrating because initially, I wasn't getting it right. The needle pierced my fingers multiple times," he said.

However, the actor said the effort eventually paid off and gave him a skill he could carry beyond the film.

"I'm so glad that I went through the drill because I have picked up a new skill in the process," he said, adding that he is now "very comfortable" operating a sewing machine.

Varun, known for taking on varied roles, said he enjoys the challenge of transforming himself for characters that are different from his own personality.

"As an actor, I like to get challenged to become someone else on-screen," he said.

Directed by Sharat Katariya and produced by Maneesh Sharma, "Sui Dhaaga" brings together the team behind the National Award-winning film "Dum Laga Ke Haisha".

The film is built around the idea of self-reliance and entrepreneurship, with its story celebrating the skills and determination of India's young people and local artisans. Through Mauji and his journey, the film seeks to highlight the dignity of traditional craftsmanship and the entrepreneurial spirit that exists at the grassroots level.
