Los Angeles: Singer-songwriter Demi Lovato has spoken candidly about the societal pressure she once felt to get married, revealing that she believed she was “expected to be married by a certain age.”
The 33-year-old artist—who married Jordan “Jutes” Lutes earlier this year—told Who What Wear that the expectation weighed on her during her younger years. However, she said her relationship ultimately progressed naturally. “There's all this pressure that society puts on you, but it just organically happened. I'm really happy,” she shared. “I told my husband today, ‘I've never been more in love with you… I didn't know my love could grow more than it already has.’ The timing was perfect.”
Reflecting on her past relationships with Joe Jonas, Wilmer Valderrama, and Max Ehrich, Demi said she has learned valuable lessons from those experiences. “I had been in past relationships where I thought, ‘Oh, this is the long game.’ But I hadn’t taken care of myself yet. The universe rewards you when you do the therapeutic work… I had to do the work. I got myself ready for a life by myself, and then I was able to share it with somebody else.”
According to Female First UK, Demi also recently shared that she feels a responsibility to be honest about her struggles. She spent three months in rehab in 2010 after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and receiving treatment for bulimia. Speaking on the Las Culturistas podcast, she explained why she chose to publicly address her challenges: “I had a decision that had to be made when I had gone to treatment for the first time.”
She referenced her widely publicized incident at age 18—when she left a Jonas Brothers tour after punching a back-up dancer—saying she has discussed the moment openly in her documentaries.
