Mouni Roy on ‘Salakaar’: My character isn’t just brave, she’s layered, conflicted, and resilient

Mumbai — The trailer of the upcoming spy thriller “Salakaar” was released on Tuesday. Lead actress Mouni Roy shared insights about her character, describing it as one of the most emotionally complex roles she has ever portrayed.

“This is one of the most emotional roles I’ve done,” said Mouni. “My character isn’t just brave—she’s deeply layered, conflicted, and incredibly resilient. She works in a high-stakes environment, constantly carrying the weight of personal trauma and a complex past.”

She added, “The trailer only scratches the surface of the multi-dimensional storytelling. I feel privileged to be part of a project that isn’t afraid to dive deeper.”

Inspired by real events, Salakaar explores a shadowy world where loyalty is a currency, silence ensures survival, and a past mission could alter the course of a nation’s future.

Directed by Faruk Kabir, the series features an ensemble cast including Naveen Kasturia, Mukesh Rishi, Purnendu Bhattacharya, Ashwath Bhatt, and Surya Sharma. Told across two time periods—1978 and 2025—the narrative explores intelligence operations, nuclear threats, and the haunting weight of unfinished missions.

The trailer introduces Adhir, a deep-cover spy who once foiled Pakistan’s nuclear plans. Now, as the National Security Advisor, he’s forced to confront the past as old enemies return and personal stakes intertwine with national security.

Director Kabir said, “I’ve always believed reality is often more unbelievable than fiction—and nowhere is that truer than the intelligence world. Though inspired by real events, Salakaar gave us room to explore the emotional and moral fallout of such a life.”

He continued, “It’s about loyalty—not just to country, but to people, to memory, to ideals. The trailer reveals only a glimpse into a world of invisible battles, silent heroism, and the heavy burden of legacy.”

Naveen Kasturia said the story leaves a lasting impact: “It’s intense, layered, and grounded in sacrifice. This role immersed me in a world where decisions are never black and white, and the stakes are deeply personal. The writing is rare—it’s both politically astute and emotionally powerful.”

Mukesh Rishi echoed that sentiment, noting the realism of the series. “My role let me explore power, obsession, and the way history lingers—it never disappears, only waits to return. Watching the trailer gave me goosebumps. Salakaar isn’t just a series—it reflects decades of hidden conflict. I’m honoured to be part of something so meaningful and timely.”

Salakaar begins streaming August 8 on JioHotstar, produced by Sphereorigins and Mahir Films.
