New Delhi — India’s largest automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India, has achieved a landmark milestone of 3 crore (30 million) cumulative car sales in the domestic market, underscoring its dominance in the country’s passenger vehicle segment.
The company announced that it took 28 years and 2 months to reach its first crore of sales, followed by 7 years and 5 months for the second crore. The third crore, however, was achieved at a record pace — in just 6 years and 4 months — reflecting Maruti Suzuki’s continued popularity among Indian car buyers.
Among the 3 crore cars sold, the Maruti Alto remains the brand’s all-time bestseller with over 47 lakh units, followed by the Wagon R with around 34 lakh units, and the Swift with over 32 lakh units. Compact SUVs like the Brezza and the newly launched Fronx have also emerged among the company’s top ten bestsellers.
Maruti Suzuki’s journey began on December 14, 1983, when it delivered its first car — the iconic Maruti 800 — to a customer in India. Since then, the automaker has grown into a household name, now offering over 170 variants across 19 models.
Expressing gratitude for the milestone, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, said the achievement fills him with “humility and gratitude.”
“When I look at the length and breadth of India and think that 3 crore customers have placed their trust in Maruti Suzuki to realise their dream of mobility, it fills me with humility and gratitude,” Takeuchi said.
He added that with car ownership in India still at around 33 vehicles per 1,000 people, the company sees tremendous growth potential ahead.
“Our journey is far from over. We will continue to make every possible effort to bring the joy of mobility to as many people as we can while contributing positively to the economy and the environment,” he added.
Maruti Suzuki reiterated its commitment to affordable, reliable mobility and to driving innovation and sustainability as it continues to shape India’s automotive future.
