Trump Announces 10?ditional Tariff on Countries Supporting 'Anti-American Policies of BRICS'

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of an additional 10% tariff on countries that align themselves with what he described as the "anti-American policies of BRICS."

The announcement comes amid growing tensions between the US and BRICS nations, following the group's criticism of Washington's trade policies. BRICS leaders, currently gathered for a summit in Rio de Janeiro, expressed deep concern over the "indiscriminate rise in tariffs" initiated by the US.

Trump made the declaration via his social media platform, Truth Social, stating: “Any country aligning themselves with the anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

In a follow-up message, Trump confirmed that formal notices regarding the new tariff measures would be sent to the affected countries beginning Monday afternoon.

“I am pleased to announce that the United States Tariff Letters and/or Deals with various countries from around the world will be delivered starting 12:00 PM (Eastern), Monday, July 7th. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he wrote.

This announcement coincides with the BRICS summit in Brazil, where member nations are discussing enhanced economic cooperation and strategic alignment among emerging economies.

In a joint statement, BRICS leaders expressed serious concern over the increasing use of unilateral tariffs and other restrictive trade measures, calling them inconsistent with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

“We voice serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures that distort trade and undermine multilateral frameworks,” the BRICS statement read.

The leaders also criticised developed nations that impose trade restrictions on developing countries under the pretext of environmental protection, warning that such actions risk damaging global trade and supply chains.

“The growing use of trade restrictions, whether in the form of indiscriminate tariffs, non-tariff barriers, or protectionist policies disguised as environmental initiatives, poses a threat to global trade and supply chain stability,” the statement added, without directly naming the US or other specific countries.

The expanded BRICS alliance now comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran.
