Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and party members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by Delhi Police at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Saturday as they arrived in the national Capital ahead of the party's proposed protest at Jantar Mantar.
Police personnel reportedly boarded the aircraft carrying Dipke shortly after it landed at the airport and detained the three CJP members.
Dipke shared a video on social media showing police personnel entering the aircraft. In the footage, he can be heard telling the officers, “I have come here to be arrested; arrest me.”
The CJP also announced the detentions through a post on its social media handle, stating: “Abhijeet Dipke DETAINED! Saurav Das DETAINED! Ashutosh Ranka DETAINED!”
The detentions came ahead of the party's planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar later in the day against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Dipke had departed from Mumbai earlier in the morning to lead the protest in Delhi.
In a separate development, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was reportedly detained by Gurugram Police from his residence earlier in the day ahead of the proposed demonstration. Rathee had participated in a protest against the SIR of electoral rolls in Bengaluru on Thursday.
The developments came amid heightened security across the national Capital, with Delhi Police maintaining a high alert ahead of the CJP's planned gathering.
Security personnel were checking vehicles at Delhi's borders, while police officers were equipped with body cameras to record any untoward incidents during the demonstration.
Security arrangements were also strengthened at the residences of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Authorities additionally deployed drones for surveillance at key locations. Several Metro stations, including Supreme Court and Mandi House, were closed as part of the security measures ahead of the planned protest.
