At least seven people were killed and more than 12 others injured in a stampede outside the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar's Lakhisarai district on Monday morning. The incident occurred as thousands of devotees gathered at the temple to offer prayers and perform Jalabhishek on the third Monday of the holy Shravan month.

According to preliminary information, panic spread among devotees after an electric wire reportedly fell near the temple. Rumours about an electrical hazard quickly circulated through the crowd, prompting people to rush in different directions. The sudden movement of the large gathering resulted in a stampede, with several devotees falling and becoming trapped beneath others.

The situation quickly turned chaotic, while local residents and fellow devotees stepped in to help those caught in the crowd. Police and administrative officials reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident and began coordinating rescue efforts. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said the massive gathering was further intensified by the arrival of two trains between around 6.30 a.m. and 6.45 a.m. The sudden surge in the number of devotees reportedly put enormous pressure on the arrangements outside the temple, eventually resulting in the collapse of a barricade.

The incident took place during one of the busiest periods at the temple, when devotees traditionally turn out in large numbers on Mondays during Sawan to worship Lord Shiva and offer water to the Shivling.

The Ashok Dham Temple, also known as Shri Indradamaneshwar Mahadev Temple, is an important religious site in Lakhisarai. The temple houses a large Shivalinga and witnesses a particularly heavy footfall during Sawan, when devotees from Lakhisarai and surrounding areas visit to perform prayers and Jalabhishek.

Sawan, or Shravan, is regarded as one of the most sacred months in the Hindu calendar and is traditionally dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees observe fasts, visit Shiva temples and perform special rituals during the month. Mondays in Sawan are considered especially auspicious, resulting in large gatherings at prominent Shiva temples across the country.

The tragedy at Ashok Dham has raised concerns about crowd management and emergency preparedness during major religious gatherings. With thousands of devotees arriving within a short period, effective barricading, controlled entry and exit points, real-time crowd monitoring and clearly communicated emergency instructions become particularly important.

Officials continued to monitor the situation at the temple following the incident. A detailed assessment of the circumstances leading to the stampede is expected to establish how the crowd surge developed and whether any lapses in crowd-control arrangements contributed to the tragedy.
