US Senate Approves Resolution to Limit Trump's Authority for Military Action Against Iran

Washington- The US Senate has passed a war powers resolution aimed at limiting Donald Trump's authority to launch further military action against Iran without prior approval from Congress.

The resolution, approved on Tuesday by a 50-48 vote, marks the first time such a measure has cleared Congress since the conflict began in February. It also reflects growing concern among lawmakers over the President's handling of the war.

Four Republican senators joined most Democrats in backing the proposal, while one Democrat voted against it, according to reports.

The legislation directs the President to withdraw US armed forces from hostilities involving Iran unless Congress formally declares war or passes a specific authorisation for the use of military force. It also reaffirms Congress' constitutional role in deciding when the United States enters armed conflict.

Supporters of the measure argued that the military campaign against Iran amounted to an unauthorised "war of choice" and said Congress must play its constitutional role in decisions involving military action.

However, several US media outlets described the resolution as largely symbolic. According to CBS News, the Trump administration maintains that American forces are not currently engaged in active hostilities with Iran, limiting the practical impact of the measure.

NBC News also noted that the resolution comes as Washington and Tehran have entered the early stages of discussions aimed at bringing the conflict to an end.

Despite the ongoing diplomatic efforts, Democratic lawmakers insisted that congressional oversight remains essential.

Speaking to reporters last week, Tim Kaine said the vote was timely, arguing that if the situation is entering a period of stability, any future military action should not proceed without Congress being involved in the decision-making process.
