Washington: US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh concerns over a possible escalation in the Middle East after posting a cryptic message alongside an AI-generated image hinting at rising tensions with Iran.
The social media post carried the caption, “It was the calm before the storm,” and featured Trump wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap while standing beside a US Navy admiral on a naval vessel amid stormy seas and lightning. Iranian ships appearing in the background added to the confrontational symbolism of the image, which many observers interpreted as a warning aimed at Tehran.
The post comes amid reports that the Trump administration is discussing possible next steps on Iran, including contingency plans for renewed air strikes if diplomatic negotiations fail. According to reports, Trump is expected to take a major decision regarding US policy toward Iran in the coming days.
In recent statements, Trump has warned that Iran could face a “very bad time” if a peace agreement is not reached soon. During a phone interview with French broadcaster BFMTV, he said Tehran has “an interest in reaching an agreement.”
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has received signals indicating that the Trump administration may be open to fresh talks, although he stressed that Iran still deeply distrusts Washington’s intentions.
Despite a ceasefire reached last month, tensions remain high across the region, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. The United States continues to maintain a strong naval presence in the Gulf region.
Iranian leaders have also maintained a firm position on the ongoing dispute. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reportedly warned that any alternative proposals to Tehran’s 14-point peace plan would fail to produce meaningful results.
At the same time, Iran has proposed a new mechanism for managing maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi stated that certain shipping routes could remain restricted for operators linked to what Tehran calls “Project Freedom,” while commercial vessels cooperating with Iranian regulations would still be allowed passage.
The developments have added to fears of renewed instability in the Middle East, with global markets and international observers closely watching the next moves by both Washington and Tehran.
