Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is likely to remain under the grip of unstable weather for the next several days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) extending its thunderstorm and lightning alert across the state till May 16. Rain, lightning, and strong winds are expected to affect many districts, raising concerns over possible disruptions and safety risks.
As per the latest IMD forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at isolated places across most parts of the state on May 11, except the north-western region.
Weather conditions are likely to worsen on May 12, particularly in southern and central Jharkhand, where wind speeds may touch 50–60 kmph. Other districts are also expected to experience strong winds and scattered rain activity.
The impact of the weather system is expected to be most severe between May 13 and 14. Districts including Ranchi, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Gumla, and Khunti are likely to witness intense thunderstorms and powerful gusty winds. Nearby districts such as Dumka, Deoghar, and Jamtara may also experience rough weather conditions.
Meanwhile, districts including Sahibganj, Pakur, Godda, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Koderma, and Lohardaga are expected to receive moderate thunderstorm activity with wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph.
According to meteorologists, the prolonged spell of turbulent weather has been triggered by multiple active atmospheric systems over eastern and central India, including an upper air cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining areas.
Authorities have advised people to remain alert, avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning, secure outdoor objects, and stay prepared for sudden weather changes.
“The weather has become very unpredictable over the past few days. Dark clouds gather suddenly and strong winds begin without much warning. We are trying to avoid unnecessary travel during storm hours,” said Rajesh Verma, a resident of Bistupur in Jamshedpur.
