India will look to build on their dominant opening win and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series when they face the West Indies in the second match at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday. However, despite the comfortable start, questions over the opening combination and pace attack could force the team management to make a few important selection calls.
India began the series in emphatic fashion in Lucknow, chasing down the West Indies’ 171-run target in just 14.4 overs. Shreyas Iyer was the star of the show, smashing an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls to register his maiden T20I century and guide India to a commanding victory.
With a 1-0 lead already secured, India have some room to experiment. The biggest question surrounds Sanju Samson, whose prolonged run of low scores could put his place under scrutiny. The wicketkeeper-batter has managed scores of just 9, 7, 2 and 11 in his last four innings.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is part of the squad, could provide an attacking alternative at the top of the order if the management decides to make a change. The teenager's aggressive approach could give India another powerplay option while allowing the team to retain Abhishek Sharma, who has been an important part of their attacking T20 strategy.
However, the team management may prefer to give Samson another opportunity, particularly with the series still in its early stages. A decision to retain him would indicate that India are willing to show patience with an experienced campaigner despite his recent lack of runs.
The middle order, meanwhile, looks settled after Iyer's spectacular performance in the series opener. His unbeaten century not only sealed the chase but also provided India with a major boost in the middle overs.
The bowling department could see another selection debate, particularly after Mayank Yadav conceded 16 runs in his first over in Lucknow. He eventually dismissed Sherfane Rutherford, who had top-scored for the West Indies with 56, but Mayank's overall outing was expensive.
Naman Dhir emerged as India's leading bowler with figures of 3-31, while Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each. The spin duo played a crucial role in restricting the West Indies and preventing their middle order from building sustained momentum.
India could consider an alternative pace combination, with Nitish Kumar Reddy offering another option. However, the management will also have to weigh the effectiveness of using him with the new ball.
For the West Indies, the biggest challenge will be to improve their batting performance. Shai Hope and Rutherford both scored half-centuries in Lucknow, but the visitors lost three wickets during the powerplay, leaving them under pressure before the pair rebuilt the innings.
The Ranchi conditions could make the contest interesting. The JSCA International Stadium has generally favoured chasing teams in T20 cricket, with four of the seven matches at the venue won by the side batting second. Three matches have been won by teams defending a total.
The average first-innings score at the venue is 138, compared with 111 in the second innings. However, the ground has also produced substantial totals. India's 196/6 against Sri Lanka remains the highest T20 score at the venue, while New Zealand's 155/3 against India is the highest successful chase.
The pitch is expected to provide a firm surface with an even covering of grass. That could allow the ball to come nicely onto the bat while offering some assistance to new-ball bowlers early in the innings.
India's squad combines experienced T20 campaigners with promising young players, including Sooryavanshi and Prince Yadav. With Shreyas Iyer leading the side, the team will be keen to maintain the momentum of the opening game while also assessing its options for the remainder of the series.
For West Indies, the second T20I represents an opportunity to immediately respond and level the series. India, meanwhile, will be looking not only for another win but also for answers to the selection questions that could shape their plans for the rest of the T20I season.
