Czech Republic's Nikola Bartunkova pulled off a major upset at the China Open on Sunday, defeating World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to advance to the pre-quarterfinals. The 20-year-old secured a convincing 6-4, 6-3 victory in one hour and 35 minutes, adding another significant scalp to her growing list of achievements.

Sabalenka's exit came just a day after World No. 1 Elena Rybakina was knocked out of the tournament. With both top-ranked players eliminated before the round of 16, the women's competition has been thrown wide open.

Ranked World No. 34, Bartunkova produced a composed and aggressive performance, breaking Sabalenka's serve three times while protecting her own throughout the match. The victory marked her second career win over a Top 10 opponent. Her previous notable triumph came at the 2026 Australian Open, where she defeated then-World No. 10 Belinda Bencic in the second round.

Speaking after the match, Bartunkova credited her mental composure for the impressive result.

"First of all, I focused on myself to be calm. Aryna is great. She's a legend. She's a Grand Slam Champion. I'm really happy I won the match," she said.

Bartunkova set the tone early by breaking Sabalenka in the opening set. Although the Belarusian fought back with pressure on her opponent's serve, the Czech player showed remarkable resilience, saving five break points in the sixth game to establish a 4-2 lead.

Bartunkova missed three opportunities to secure another break in the following game but recovered quickly. She then held her next two service games without dropping a point to close out the opening set 6-4.

The Czech continued her momentum in the second set, breaking Sabalenka to take a 3-1 lead. She maintained her advantage with confident serving and delivered another decisive blow in the ninth game, breaking the World No. 2 once more to seal the match 6-3 without facing a single break point of her own.

For Sabalenka, the defeat continues a disappointing run at the Beijing tournament. Despite her status among the world's leading players, she has yet to progress beyond the quarterfinals in any of her five main-draw appearances at the China Open.

The early departures of Sabalenka and Rybakina have also produced a rare tournament milestone. For the first time in 12 years, neither of the top two women's seeds will feature in the China Open's round of 16. The last such occurrence was in 2015, when top seed Simona Halep and second seed Petra Kvitova both failed to reach the pre-quarterfinals.

Bartunkova's breakthrough victory now puts her among the players to watch as the tournament enters its decisive stages, while the elimination of the leading contenders opens up fresh opportunities for the remaining field.
