India's spinners produced a superb opening session on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka, reducing the hosts to 99/5 at lunch at the Galle International Stadium on Monday.
Sri Lanka, chasing India's imposing first-innings total of 462, were still 363 runs behind when the lunch interval arrived. The hosts now face a difficult task to avoid being asked to follow on.
The morning session saw six wickets fall, five of them belonging to Sri Lanka, as India's bowlers exploited the turn and bounce available from the Galle surface.
Mohammed Siraj made the first breakthrough almost immediately. Bowling in the opening over, he produced a fine outswinger that induced Nishan Madushka to edge behind to first slip, sending the Sri Lankan opener back without scoring.
Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar then made an instant impact, claiming a wicket with his very first delivery. He drew Dinesh Chandimal forward with drift and turn, with the resulting glove edge safely taken by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
Suthar continued to trouble the Sri Lankan batters with accuracy, variation and bounce. He later dismissed Lahiru Udara for 27 after the batter mistimed a cut shot and offered a straightforward catch at backward point. Suthar finished the session with impressive figures of 2/17.
Kuldeep Yadav also joined the attack with a wicket, while Ravindra Jadeja demonstrated his effectiveness on the turning Galle surface by removing Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva for 21.
India's fielding added another highlight to the dominant session. Captain Shubman Gill produced a spectacular one-handed diving catch at short extra cover to dismiss Kamindu Mendis for 14 off Kuldeep's bowling. Gill's athletic effort gave India another breakthrough when Sri Lanka were attempting to rebuild after losing three early wickets.
Jadeja then struck shortly before lunch, maintaining a tight line around the stumps and getting the outside edge of Dhananjaya's bat. KL Rahul completed a low catch at first slip.
At lunch, Niroshan Dickwella was unbeaten on eight and Sonal Dinusha was on 13, with Sri Lanka still needing a substantial recovery to stay in the contest.
India had earlier been bowled out for 462, with Devdutt Padikkal producing a career-best 167 and KL Rahul contributing 82. Sri Lanka's Prabath Jayasuriya took 4/109, while Keshara Nuwantha claimed 3/175.
The strong start with the ball has put India firmly in control. With the pitch already offering significant assistance to the spinners, the visitors will be looking to complete the remaining five wickets quickly and enforce maximum pressure on the Sri Lankan batting line-up.
