Glasgow: Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam won the bronze medal in the women's 58kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Monday, adding another podium finish to India's impressive campaign.
The Manipur lifter recorded a total lift of 199kg, comprising 87kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk, to finish third. Bindyarani had earlier claimed a silver medal in the women's 55kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Her bronze medal took India's overall tally to six medals—one gold, three silver, and two bronze.
Nigeria's Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her Commonwealth title by winning gold with a total lift of 229kg (103kg snatch + 126kg clean and jerk), while Canada's Ann Sophie Taschereau secured silver with 215kg (94kg snatch + 121kg clean and jerk).
After the snatch phase, Bindyarani was tied with England's Eliza Pratt at 87kg. However, the Indian lifter produced a stronger performance in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 110kg and 112kg before narrowly failing in her final attempt at 116kg, ensuring her place on the podium.
Although the bronze was another major achievement, the total of 199kg fell short of Bindyarani's personal best of 208kg. Her opening clean and jerk attempt, initially declared successful, was later overturned by the jury and ruled a no-lift due to elbow movement during the jerk, adding pressure to the remainder of her competition.
Pratt finished fourth with a combined lift of 196kg, missing out on a medal by a narrow margin.
Weightlifting has once again emerged as one of India's strongest disciplines at the Glasgow Games. Bindyarani's medal was India's second weightlifting medal of the day, following Gyaneshwari Yadav's silver in the women's 53kg category.
On Sunday, Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu had opened India's gold account by winning the women's title, while Muthupandi Raja secured silver in the men's 65kg event.
