New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ushered in a new era in the shortest format of the game by appointing Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. The announcement was made on Saturday at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai ahead of India’s upcoming tours of Ireland and England.
Iyer’s first assignment as captain will begin with a two-match T20I series against Ireland in Dublin on June 26 and 28, followed by a five-match series in England from July 1 to 11. His appointment signals India’s long-term vision as the team prepares for major events, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The decision comes after intense discussions surrounding India’s T20I leadership. While Suryakumar Yadav had successfully led India to a memorable T20 World Cup title defense on home soil earlier this year, his prolonged dip in form prompted selectors and team management to look ahead and identify a leader for the future.
Sources suggest that retaining Suryakumar through the England tour was considered, while Hardik Pandya was also among the candidates for the role. However, Iyer’s impressive leadership record, combined with the respect he commands within dressing rooms across domestic cricket and the IPL, ultimately tipped the scales in his favor.
Suryakumar endured a difficult IPL 2026 campaign, scoring just 270 runs in 13 innings for Mumbai Indians at an average of 20.76. His T20 World Cup performance was also below expectations, with 242 runs at a strike rate of 136.72.
For Iyer, the appointment marks a remarkable comeback. After falling out of India’s T20I plans following December 2023, he rebuilt his case through consistent performances and successful captaincy stints. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals in 2020 and 2025 respectively, and captained Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy triumph in the 2024-25 season.
The 31-year-old was recalled for the home T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year as cover for the injured Tilak Varma, though he did not feature in a match. Now, he returns not only as a batter but as India’s 15th T20I captain, entrusted with leading the team into its next phase.
Interestingly, this is the second consecutive instance of an Indian captain being replaced shortly after lifting an ICC trophy. In 2025, Rohit Sharma led India to the Champions Trophy title before Shubman Gill took over the ODI captaincy ahead of the Australia tour later that year.
With Shreyas Iyer at the helm, Indian cricket has made a clear statement about its future direction, placing its faith in a leader seen as capable of guiding the team through the next chapter of its T20 journey.
