New Delhi — A fresh controversy erupted in the Pakistan Super League 2026 during the high-voltage clash between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings, as allegations of ball tampering disrupted the match’s closing moments. Lahore captain Shaheen Shah Afridi appeared uneasy when questioned about the incident after the game.
The drama unfolded at the beginning of the final over of Karachi’s chase. On-field umpire Faisal Afridi inspected the ball bowled by Haris Rauf after it had been passed between Afridi and Fakhar Zaman. Following a prolonged discussion with fellow umpire Sharfuddoula, the officials decided to replace the ball, suspecting it had been tampered with.
During the post-match presentation, former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja pressed Afridi for clarity. The Lahore skipper struggled to give a direct explanation, saying the team would review the footage but admitted that the decision had already impacted the game.
Afridi maintained that he had no role in altering the ball’s condition. He explained that he was only trying to dry and shine it when umpires instructed players not to use their shirts for that purpose. He also emphasized that no formal accusation had been made against him and that he had not been called in for any inquiry.
The incident had immediate consequences on the match. Karachi Kings were awarded five penalty runs, and their batters — Khushdil Shah and Azam Khan — were allowed to choose the replacement ball.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that Fakhar Zaman has been charged with a Level-III offence. The charge could result in a suspension of one to two matches if proven. Match referee Roshan Mahanama is expected to conduct a hearing within the next two days, where Fakhar will contest the allegations.
The controversy has added a cloud over the tournament, raising fresh questions about on-field conduct and officiating standards in the PSL.
