Hyderabad — The FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers witnessed a gripping encounter on Monday as the India women's national field hockey team battled to a 2-2 draw against Scotland women's national field hockey team in their Pool B clash at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Stadium in Hyderabad.
Despite the stalemate, India continue to lead the group standings with four points, edging ahead of Scotland on goal difference. Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo scored for the hosts, while Heather McEwan and Fiona Burnet found the net for Scotland.
Scotland made the brighter start to the match, opening the scoring in the sixth minute. A penalty corner opportunity was converted by Heather McEwan, who neatly guided the ball past the Indian defence to give her side an early 1-0 advantage. India responded by pushing forward aggressively and creating chances, with Lalremsiami winning the team’s first penalty corner. However, Udita’s drag-flick missed the target. Another penalty corner soon followed, but a mistake during the trap allowed Scotland to counter, forcing India to remain cautious at the back as the opening quarter ended with the visitors ahead.
India stepped up their intensity in the second quarter and quickly found an equaliser. In the 18th minute, Navneet Kaur reacted swiftly after a mishandled trap during a penalty corner and smashed the ball into the net to make it 1-1. Scotland tried to regain the lead soon after, but Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi produced a brilliant save to deny Amy Costello’s drag-flick.
The hosts kept pressing and were rewarded just before halftime. Following a chaotic scramble in front of goal during a penalty corner, Sunelita Toppo reacted fastest to tap in the rebound in the 29th minute, putting India 2-1 ahead at the break.
The third quarter saw Scotland fight back strongly. In the 33rd minute, a well-worked passing move set up by McEwan allowed Fiona Burnet to score the equaliser, bringing the contest level again at 2-2. Scotland then enjoyed a spell of sustained possession, limiting India’s attacking opportunities for several minutes. India eventually created pressure of their own, earning a series of penalty corners, but the Scottish defence held firm.
The final quarter turned into a tense battle with both sides searching for a decisive goal. India began strongly with another penalty corner, but Scottish goalkeeper Jessica Buchanan stood tall to deny them. The hosts launched several attacking moves in the closing minutes, including a promising run from Baljeet Singh that lacked a finishing touch inside the circle.
India earned one last penalty corner late in the game, but Buchanan once again produced a crucial save to keep Scotland level. With neither team able to break the deadlock in the closing stages, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
India will now turn their focus to their next Pool B fixture against the Wales women's national field hockey team on Wednesday evening.
