Kandy - Pakistan wrapped up their campaign at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 with a thrilling five-run victory over Sri Lanka in a Super 8s clash on Saturday. However, the win was not enough to propel Pakistan into the knockout stage as they finished behind New Zealand on Net Run Rate. The match was played at the Pallekele International Stadium.
Batting first, Pakistan posted a formidable 212/8, powered by a commanding opening partnership between Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman. Farhan struck a brilliant 100 off 60 balls, becoming the first batter to score two centuries in a single T20 World Cup edition, while Fakhar chipped in with a rapid 84. Despite late wickets, Pakistan comfortably crossed the 200-run mark.
In reply, Sri Lanka stumbled early but recovered through steady middle-order partnerships. Captain Dasun Shanaka played a sensational unbeaten knock of 76 to keep his side in contention until the final over. Chasing 28 off the last six balls, Shanaka smashed three sixes and a four, but Sri Lanka eventually fell short at 207/5.
Although Pakistan won the match, their inability to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 meant they could not surpass New Zealand on Net Run Rate, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
