
Mumbai -The Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series is set to return for its fifth edition, with qualifying matches scheduled for January 30–31 and the main draw commencing on February 2 at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) courts in Mumbai.
Over the years, the tournament has earned a reputation as one of India’s premier women’s tennis events, regularly attracting high-calibre international talent. Previous editions have featured some of the biggest names in women’s tennis, underlining the tournament’s growing global stature.
This year’s edition promises another competitive field, with eight players in the main draw ranked inside the world’s top 150. The tournament once again offers Indian tennis fans an opportunity to witness elite women’s tennis at close quarters.
Ahead of the start of play, here is a look at some of the leading international players competing in the Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series this season:
Lulu Sun
New Zealand’s Lulu Sun, who has achieved a career-high singles ranking of 39 and is currently ranked 86, brings significant Grand Slam experience at just 24 years of age. She has competed in all four majors, with her breakthrough performance coming at Wimbledon 2024. There, she stunned World No. 8 Zheng Qinwen in the first round before reaching the quarterfinals as a qualifier, also defeating former US Open champion Emma Raducanu along the way. Sun was also named to the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group I All-Star Team after remaining unbeaten in singles and doubles and helping New Zealand advance to the play-offs.
Darja Semenistaja
Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja returns to Mumbai as the defending champion, having lifted the title in 2024 after a dramatic comeback win over Australia’s Storm Hunter in the final. With a career-high ranking of 87 and a current ranking of 98, Semenistaja has captured 18 ITF singles titles and continues to build consistency across both clay and hard courts.
Leolia Jeanjean
French player Leolia Jeanjean, currently ranked 103 and a former World No. 91, has claimed four ITF singles titles and featured in all four Grand Slam tournaments. Her standout result came at the 2022 French Open, where she defeated World No. 8 Karolina Pliskova en route to the third round, becoming the lowest-ranked player to beat a Top 10 opponent at Roland Garros since 1988. As one of the highest-ranked players in the draw, Jeanjean will be one to watch in Mumbai.
Kimberly Birrell
German-born Australian Kimberly Birrell has a career-high ranking of 60 and is currently placed at 76. A seven-time ITF singles title winner, Birrell made a strong return to the tour following a prolonged injury layoff between 2019 and 2023. Since her comeback, she has featured in six Grand Slams and recently recorded a notable win over World No. 8 Emma Navarro at the 2025 Brisbane International.
Joanna Garland
Chinese Taipei’s top-ranked singles player, Joanna Garland, has reached a career-best world ranking of 117. Born in England, the 24-year-old has competed in all four Grand Slams since last year and owns 17 ITF singles titles. At this year’s Australian Open, she reached the final of the 1 Point Slam exhibition event at Rod Laver Arena, defeating several high-profile players along the way.
Mananchaya Sawangkaew
Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, the runner-up at last year’s Mumbai Open, returns determined to go one step further. She achieved a career-high ranking of 100 in 2024 and has won four ITF singles titles. Despite injury setbacks, including a withdrawal from the Singapore tournament in 2025, she remains a dangerous competitor capable of making a deep run.
Arantxa Rus
Dutch left-hander Arantxa Rus brings vast experience to the field, with a career-high singles ranking of 41 achieved in August 2023 and a current ranking of 133. A regular presence on the Grand Slam and WTA circuits for over a decade, Rus has recorded notable victories over top players, including Kim Clijsters and Samantha Stosur. She won her maiden WTA singles title at the 2023 Hamburg European Open and has also secured multiple doubles titles and WTA 125 trophies.
The Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series will begin with qualifying rounds on January 30 and 31, followed by the main draw from February 2. All matches will be played at the MSLTA, with Indian players also set to feature through wildcard entries, to be announced ahead of the tournament.
