Harshit Rana Reprimanded for Code of Conduct Breach in 1st ODI

Dubai: India’s fast bowler Harshit Rana has been officially reprimanded for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during India’s victory over South Africa in the first ODI in Ranchi.

Rana was found guilty of violating Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article deals with “using language, actions, or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

The incident occurred in the 22nd over of South Africa’s innings when Rana, after dismissing Dewald Brevis, made a gesture toward the visitors’ dressing room. The act was deemed potentially provocative, resulting in Rana being handed one demerit point on his disciplinary record.

This is Rana’s first offence within the last 24 months. He admitted to the breach and accepted the penalty proposed by match referee Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel, making a formal hearing unnecessary.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, along with third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.

Level 1 offences carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50% of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

In the match, India secured a thrilling 17-run win to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Batting first, India posted 349/8, powered by Virat Kohli’s brilliant 135—his 52nd ODI century—and solid fifties from Rohit Sharma (57) and KL Rahul (60).

South Africa’s reply began poorly as Rana removed both Rickelton and de Kock in the same over. Arshdeep Singh added pressure by dismissing captain Aiden Markram. Although Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi, and Dewald Brevis built crucial partnerships, Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket haul consistently derailed their momentum.

Marco Jansen’s aggressive knock revived hopes for the Proteas, and Henry Bosch’s fighting fifty kept the contest alive until the final over, with 19 needed. However, Prasidh Krishna dismissed Bosch to seal India’s narrow victory.
