World Athletics Championships: Neeraj Chopra vs Arshad Nadeem in javelin final – when and where to watch

Tokyo — The much-anticipated rivalry between India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem will take centre stage once again on Thursday in the men’s javelin final at the World Athletics Championships. Chopra, who crossed the 90-metre mark earlier this season, is eyeing history as he bids to defend his world title.

On Wednesday, the Indian star sealed his place in the final with minimal effort, registering 84.85m on his very first attempt — comfortably past the automatic qualification mark of 84.50m. Remarkably, this is the fifth consecutive time Chopra has advanced to a global final with just a single throw, repeating the feat he achieved at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Germany’s Julian Weber also advanced with an impressive second attempt of 87.21m after opening with 82.29m. Compatriot Sachin Yadav scraped through following a nervous wait, while Pakistan’s reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem booked his spot with a clutch final throw.

Chopra, 27, from Haryana, created history in Budapest in 2023 by becoming India’s first-ever world champion in athletics with an 88.17m throw. Nadeem took silver in that event with 87.82m. But the rivalry intensified at the Paris Olympics in 2024, where Nadeem stunned the Indian ace with a monumental 92.97m effort to clinch gold, leaving Chopra with silver after a best throw of 89.45m.

This year’s 12-man final features a formidable line-up, including former world champion Anderson Peters, Germany’s Julian Weber, and Kenya’s veteran Julius Yego. Yet, the spotlight will firmly be on the Chopra–Nadeem clash — a duel that has become symbolic of South Asia’s growing presence in global athletics.
