Technology to stabilise mine dump slopes, prevent soil erosion and promote greenery across more than 50 acres
Jamshedpur/West Bokaro, October 23, 2026: Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division has introduced hydroseeding technology in its mining areas, marking another step towards sustainable mining and environmental conservation. The initiative aims to stabilise mine dump slopes, control soil erosion and accelerate ecological restoration through modern technology.
Hydroseeding is an advanced vegetation technique in which a specially formulated mixture of seeds, mulch, water, fertilisers and soil-enhancing materials is sprayed over large areas using specialised machinery. The method is particularly suitable for mine dumps, steep slopes and uneven terrain where conventional plantation methods are difficult, time-consuming and labour-intensive.
The technology offers several benefits, including effective soil erosion control, improved slope stability, reduced risk of landslides and faster vegetation growth. It also helps retain moisture in the soil, supporting seed germination and promoting natural greenery. By reducing manual intervention in difficult terrain, hydroseeding also enhances operational safety and enables large areas to be covered in less time.
The hydroseeding machine can spray the mixture over a distance of up to 50 metres and effectively cover dump slopes extending up to 80 metres. This enables access to challenging locations that are otherwise difficult to reach. Initial results have been encouraging, with visible vegetation growth on slopes and improved coverage across large areas.
So far, hydroseeding has been carried out across more than 50 acres, including mining areas, nurseries and mine dumps. The initiative is expected to accelerate vegetation development, support biodiversity and improve the surrounding environment.
The initiative reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to adopting modern technologies, prioritising safety and strengthening environmental sustainability in mining operations. Hydroseeding is expected to play an important role in rehabilitating mined land, restoring vegetation and maintaining ecological balance.
Kaushik Gayen, Head of Planning, West Bokaro Division, Tata Steel, said, “By adopting hydroseeding technology, Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division has taken an innovative and cost-effective step towards rehabilitating mining-affected areas and overburden slopes. The technology helps stabilise slopes quickly, restore ecosystems and develop green cover. It also improves safety by reducing the need for manual work in inaccessible areas. This initiative reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to responsible mining and environmental sustainability.”
