A baby hippopotamus was born early Thursday morning at Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ormanjhi, bringing cheer to the park management. The female hippo, Moni, delivered a healthy calf under the supervision of veterinarian Dr Rakesh Jojo. With this birth, the total number of hippos at the park has risen to 11.

Moni herself was born at the park on 20 January 2023. She is the daughter of resident hippos Lalu and Lily. Her becoming a mother has further expanded the hippo family at the facility.

Park Director Jabbar Singh expressed happiness over the arrival of the newborn. He said continuous monitoring is being done of both the mother and the calf, and all necessary care is being provided to keep them healthy. The management is remaining fully alert about the well-being of the pair.

The increase in the hippo population is being seen as a positive step for wildlife conservation and breeding efforts at the park. Officials also hope the new arrival will add to the attraction for visitors in the coming days.
